These days, I live with my good dog Banjo on a rustic mountain along the Virginia/West Virginia border. Most of my non-writing time is spent building, maintaining, breaking, and fixing things, wrangling stubborn items like rocks and logs, searching creek beds for fossils, hoping it will rain or stop raining, adjusting the woodstove’s airflow, hiking with Banjo or throwing him one of his pitiful balls I should probably throw away, enjoying a coffee or a beer while listening to the birds return, enjoying not writing, and enjoying thinking about what I will write next.

The eight-volume Conversations With US book series documents Chris's pedal-powered exploration of the United States, focusing on the daily conversations he had with nearly 400 diverse Americans along the way. Chris toured the country in several regional blocks, averaging around 5 weeks and 1,900 miles per region.

These tours are now being documented in regional volumes, the first three of which have so far been published: Great Lakes States, American Southwest, and Appalachia & Bluegrass Country. Prairie Heartland is next in line.
